The developed scientific certification system has been designated by the New Zealand government and the NPI as THE standard method for certifying Manuka Honey. The certification system, developed by Institute of Food Chemistry at the Technical University of Dresden in Germany under the leadership of professor Thomas Henle and Manuka Health, is now the mandatory measurement method in New Zealand from government roads. Professor Henle and his team were the first to document that the compound primarily responsible for the non-peroxide very unique activity of Manuka Honey Methylglyoxal was. MANUKA HONEY – QUALITY ASSURANCE

100% Original Manuka Honey from New Zealand

Manuka Health New Zealand Ltd only buys manuka honey from its own beehives or from external beekeepers from all over New Zealand. The honey is processed, packaged and labeled at the Manuka Health processing facility in Weona Court, Te Awamutu.

All honey barrels undergo a reception process upon arrival at the processing facility, during which visual inspections are performed, honey samples are taken and the source documentation of the manuka honey is checked, as required by the New Zealand Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI) – requirements for processing bee products. The certified laboratory of Manuka Health New Zealand Ltd tests samples from all vessels on site. The analysis involves testing methylglyoxal (MGO) and dihydroxyacetone (DHA) content, hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), diastase, DNA analysis of manuka pollen, moisture content and microbiological parameters. After the reception and quality controls are completed, the honey barrels are stored in the temperature-controlled storage of Manuka Health. Stored barrels are regularly subjected to sampling and testing to check and guarantee the quality of the honey.

Processing and packaging of the manuka honey is done in a batch process. The Operations and Planning teams select honey barrels with the required quality parameters to ensure that each batch of honey meets the criteria for release of the end product. During processing, the batch of honey is constantly checked for quality, including visual inspection and analysis by the Operations Production team.

All honey batches undergo rigorous on-site laboratory testing before being released. If necessary, additional samples are sent to external IANZ-certified laboratories for analysis by the New Zealand accreditation body.

Manuka honey must meet the specifications of the Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI) as set out in its guideline document ‘Interim Labeling Guide for Manuka Honey’ of 31 July 2014. The specifications for manuka honey include the following parameters: color, conductivity, taste , aroma, presence of pollen of the Manuka type and the presence of MGO and DHA.

The individual batches of honey are released by the quality assurance team. The release criteria are based on the production data and the batch data sheet, the test results of the batch and the origin documentation. This ensures that the manuka honey meets the legal and market requirements. For honey with a special product characteristic (eg MGO), the results must meet the release criteria according to the quality control for that characteristic before the batch can be released. Quality criteria for the release of honey products from Manuka Health are drawn up and confirmed by the Manuka Health Group, including with regard to research and development, regulations and quality assurance.

The quality assurance team provides an analysis certificate for each batch of honey. The honey product is only released from quarantine for labeling and then shipment when these strict quality assessment criteria are met.

In addition, Manuka Health participates in the E-Certificate of Official Assurances program, a web application with which the New Zealand government (MPI) provides guarantees to other governments with regard to animal and dairy products that are exported by New Zealand. The New Zealand Environment Protection Authority (EPA) protects bees and other pollinators such as moths, butterflies, gliders and birds by setting rules on when, how and where insecticides can be used. In New Zealand, strict rules have been in place for years regarding the use of a class of insecticides containing neonicotinoids. As a New Zealand environmental regulator, the EPA has the task of controlling these risks.
