Living Sea Therapy is a window on Cornwall’s unique geological past. It includes the underwater voyage of Cornwall, with ancient rock dramas and mysterious kelp forests, which provide us with cobalt water and unique marine minerals. In collaboration with our sister companies, Cornish Sea Salt Co. and Cornish Seaweed Co. and a team of marine biologists, environmentalists and leading therapists, we have developed our Living Sea Therapy® range. Using sustainable hand harvesting and exclusive processes based on the natural sciences, we have developed our miracle ingredient Living Sea Complex®, which combines three vital elements to utilize the restorative powers of the sea especially for you and your skin.
The story begins deep beneath the breaking waves where rich salt and sea minerals, unique to the cobalt water around the Lizard peninsula, have been collected by The Cornish Sea Salt Co. We harvest a few meters from our rugged coastline by hand using a zero-impact, 3,000-year-old craft process and innovative technology. In addition to harvesting delicate sea salt flakes covered with beneficial minerals, we also harvest a mineral-rich elixir known as Cornish Sea Salt Minerals, which enters all our marine cocktails to provide a wealth of benefits to revitalize your skin.
The story continues as we drift through centuries-old kelp forests along the rocky shoreline to enjoy rugged, primitive plants that thrive in one of the roughest environments in the world. We have taken the essence of three of the most hardy, most nutrient-rich species to bring an abundance of natural vitamins, minerals and goodness directly to your skin. Your conscience will also benefit because the sustainable diving and foraging techniques used by our sister brand, The Cornish Seaweed Co., determine the way in which all seaweed is harvested in the UK.
Cornish Sea Salt Co. started almost ten years ago. harvest the mineral resources of the Atlantic Ocean from the rocky shores of the Lizard peninsula. This is how the Salt House team matches a 3000 year old artisanal process with modern techniques while protecting the oceans.
Salt production in Coverack, on the Lizard peninsula in Cornwall, dates back to the Iron Age. Today the Cornish Sea Salt Co. harvest. sea minerals just a few steps away. At the time, seawater was dammed in rock pools and allowed to dry out before being cooked in clay pots over gas fires. It was vital for the preservation of meat, but also in the Cornish sardine industry. With the revival of the extraction of rock salt in Cheshire in the late 19th century, the production of sea salt in coastal towns died.
Fortunately, ten years ago, Tony Fraser, a conservation enthusiast, walked past the Salt Works of the Iron Age in Trebarveth, near Coverack, and had the idea of revitalizing local sea salt production. Cornish Sea Salt Co. started acting and creatively bridged the gap between old, traditional methods and innovative, modern technology. Cornish Sea Salt Co. had developed a technique to sustainably harvest ultra-rich marine minerals by hand at the source, from the pure waters off the Lizard peninsula.
Natural minerals, unique technology
Now, with the help of a highly scientific but zero-impact process, Cornish Sea Salt Co. filters, crystallizes and cuts. Every day 15,000 tons of seawater, produces the world famous sea salt used by chefs, restaurants and food producers around the world.
In the Salt House in Porthkerris on the lizard, just a few meters from the translucent Atlantic waters, seawater is purified and then passed through positively and negatively charged electrolytic plates, the charged ions being moved and relatively higher concentrations of sodium chloride being formed by inverted osmosis. In the crystallization phase the gas fires and clay pots have disappeared. In their place are huge barrels and ultraviolet lights. The groundbreaking process results in beautiful crystals formed on the surface. As with old techniques, the salt crystals are carefully harvested and dried by hand.
“The result is a very clean, efficient and sustainable process,” says Philip Tanswell, Managing Director of CSS. “We take the seawater out and put it back right away, removing only 0.5% of the salt from the water. We have a benign, really ecologically friendly process.”
Cornish Sea Salt is pure and fresh, as nature intended, which means that it retains more of the health benefits while being stripped of extracted salts and sold separately. It is an important reason why we use it in our unique formulas for Living Sea Therapy, including lotions, creams, salt scrubs and washes. It makes perfect sense to say it on your skin, Philip says: “If you look at the mineral profile of our body, they fit exactly with the minerals and salts in the ocean.”
There are more than 60 minerals in the sea around the lizard, which is three times more minerals by type than allegedly found in the dead sea salt (21) and they are all unique to these waters, a designated area with exceptional natural beauty and conservation of the sea Zone. We are able to consistently extract these minerals with the same purity levels in each individual batch. These 60 minerals cover and fill all the cracks of the sodium chloride crystals that our team harvest. They create a rich layer of goodness that reflects the content of the ocean. In the culinary sense, this translates into unique taste and nutrition; while it is in skin care, it offers many health and beauty benefits.
The more well-known minerals in our sea salt are calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium and sulfur. These five minerals alone increase blood circulation, reduce inflammation and help heal acne, fight aging and itchy skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. Philip adds: “That’s why the blood in the sea is pumped into the sea, your senses are stimulated and your skin becomes hydrated and tighter.”
